Material + Light — Reading the Surface
Surface · Shadow · Experience

Materials are experienced through light. Direction, intensity, reflection and shadow can change the perception of colour, texture and depth without changing the material itself. Lighting belongs in the material selection process.
Read the surface under different conditions
A subtle texture can almost disappear under frontal light and become distinct under grazing light. Reflective and matt surfaces distribute light differently. Compare the proposed materials in daylight and under the intended artificial lighting.
Connect material with architecture
Format, joints and changes of plane influence the pattern of light and shadow. Treat the surface as part of the room rather than as a detached sample. Consider how stone, timber, metal and textiles respond together.
Test the intended experience
A hospitality space, a home and an F&B setting can require different balances of visual calm and expression. Review representative samples or a mock-up with the lighting concept. Avoid selecting a finish solely because it looks compelling under one showroom light.
